This development was planned by German architects and is built around a circular man-made lake; it includes a planetarium, shopping, and massive office and residential development. Target population was 450,000 but it has not grown as quickly as planners hoped. There are eight university campuses on the west side with about 100,000 students.

南匯新城鎮是中華人民共和國上海市浦東新區下轄的一個鎮，2012年9月19日正式掛牌成立。由原申港街道、蘆潮港鎮和老港鎮大治河以南（不含大河村和東河村）的區域合併組成。管轄範圍東至長江，南至杭州灣，西至奉賢區和浦東新區泥城鎮、書院鎮邊界，北至大治河。政府駐地申港大道200號。區域面積152.15平方公里。 南匯新城自2000年代起進行開發，原名臨港新城，規劃面積296.6平方公里，包括中心區、主產業區、重裝備區和物流區、綜合區。
