Go at first light; before seven it's almost empty. Carry on into the gardens of Tenryu-ji afterwards.
The story
The bamboo on both sides of the path grows taller than houses, and sunlight filters down through the gaps. By day it's crowded with visitors, but early in the morning all you hear is the leaves brushing against each other.
