Hanamikoji
Wooden teahouses along a stone street, where you may glimpse a geiko at dusk
A fuller guide to this place, built from 6 sources, is written in Traditional Chinese.
Being there
Go around six, when the teahouse lanterns come on. Don't chase geiko for photos; many of the side lanes are private.
The story
Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district. Many of the wooden townhouses along the street are teahouses and restaurants with small name plates by the door. Around dusk you may see a geiko or maiko hurrying past on the way to an engagement.
