Anping Tree House
在那裡
Anping Tree House was built as the warehouse of Tait & Co. During the Japanese occupation it was the office and warehouse of the Japan Salt Company. After World War II, the salt industry in Anping declined, and this area was abandoned. Over time, the aerial roots and branches of banyan trees wrapped around the building. Combined with the soil, red brick and partial concrete wall, this creates an unusual sight and is a popular tourist attraction. There is also a sky bridge behind with a view of Yanshui estuary.
- 1Building and banyan grown into one, inside and out — rare anywhere in Taiwan
- 2A raised walkway behind takes you up to canopy height, with a view of the Yanshui estuary
- 3The same ticket covers the Tait & Co. merchant house next door
出發前
- Go in at opening time, when low light slants through the roots
- Pause at the top of the walkway to see the whole tree-house from above
- Anping Old Street and Fort Zeelandia are a short walk away — make it one half-day
- Midday in summer is hot and there is no air conditioning
- Weekend middays get crowded on the walkway
它的故事
More than a century ago this was the warehouse of the British trading house Tait & Co., stacked with camphor and sugar, with boats tied up on the canal outside. Under Japanese rule it stored salt; after the war the salt trade died and the building was left alone. Banyan seeds landed on the walls and spent decades climbing over everything. By the time anyone came back, nobody wanted to cut the trees down — so they stayed.
