Qingtian Street
Being there
Walk under the old trees in the morning. Qingtian 76 can be visited by booking, or find a café in one of the old houses.
The story
Ninety years ago, Japanese professors of Taihoku Imperial University lived around here. In 1931 an agriculture professor built his home on this street, with a garden and a wooden veranda; after the war a geology professor moved in. Most houses like it were replaced by apartment blocks, and Qingtian Street is one of the few lanes where a whole group survives. All you hear is birds and someone sweeping leaves, though the main road is one corner away.
