Bopiliao Historic Block
Being there
Come on a weekday afternoon and walk it end to end; the light under the brick arcades is lovely. Closed Mondays.
The story
The odd name is said to date from the Qing dynasty, when fir logs shipped from Fuzhou were unloaded and stripped of bark here. The row of houses was later reserved for a school that was never built, and decades of waiting saved it from demolition; it is now one of the most complete Qing streets in Taipei. The film Monga was shot here, and on a weekday you may have the street to yourself.
