Yongle Market
Being there
Have swordfish rice-noodle soup for breakfast downstairs, before ten. Then go up to the fabric floor; tailors there will make something from the cloth you pick.
The story
At eight in the morning the noodle soup downstairs is on its second pot and the fabric stalls upstairs are just rolling up their shutters. The market stood at the busiest corner of Dadaocheng in the Japanese era. After the war, cloth traders settled here one after another until the district became Taiwan's fabric wholesale centre. Young designers come to dig through the bolts now, while the stalls downstairs are still run by the same families.
