Dadaocheng Wharf
Being there
Go through the flood gate before five, buy a beer at the container stalls and sit on the embankment until the sun drops behind Guanyin Mountain.
The story
You have to pass through a thick flood wall to reach the river. Once there was no wall: tea and camphor were loaded straight onto ships here, and the trading houses faced the Tamsui River. Flood defences later cut the city off from its river for decades. The wharf is now a rebuilt riverside, and by evening it seems all of Taipei knows this is where the sunset is best.
